Rail contract onslaught continues with Newcastle win

Viacom Outdoor has this week boosted its rail portfolio by being named preferred bidder for the prestigious Tyne & Wear Metro system run by Nexus.

Nexus, the Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Executive has awarded Viacom Outdoor the exclusive rights to sell all its outdoor poster formats at 57 stations across this high profile metro system. Previously managed in-house, the deal is worth in excess of £10million over the next five years.

Focussed around Newcastle, Sunderland and Gateshead, the Metro also connects to the key football grounds at St James Park, the Stadium of Light and also with Newcastle Airport. This is the UK’s biggest Metro system after the London Underground.

Added to Arriva Trains Wales, Chiltern, Merseyrail, Transpennine Express, Central Trains, Scotrail, First Great Western Link, and GNER, this latest deal now gives Viacom Outdoor a considerable rail footprint across the UK with a 27 per cent share of all journeys.

Andrew Oldham, Joint Managing Director says,

‘Our national rail proposition just keeps on growing. The Tyne & Wear Metro offers advertisers a highly focused major urban centre and exposure to over 40 million passenger journeys a year. Despite what anyone else may claim, if you want anything like national coverage on rail and to reach consumers on the move in key cities, you simply cannot afford to miss out the significant audience we offer.

The advertising on the Tyne & Wear Metro has previously been managed in-house and is highly regarded within the region. We are looking forward to opening up this valuable audience to national advertisers to expand the business base and maintain local advertiser presence.

We will also be implementing a considerable investment programme to upgrade the sites, as well as bringing some of the successful products and innovations we’ve delivered on the London Underground to the Nexus network to deliver its ultimate potential.’

Viacom Outdoor takes over the contract on Monday 28th March.
